One Goal

Making a difference in the community we reside in was one step for this program. We have continued to feed families , and provide gifts and entertainment to those in need in our community for the past 35 years.

The Mission

Helping Hands Holiday Dinner aims to make the holiday season happier for those in need.

In December of 1989, a traditional turkey dinner and a visit from Santa thrilled 350 people. This fulfilled a dream that Drs. Louis and Lori Okun both shared: to provide for those less fortunate during the holiday season. Annually, the program grew. Until the numbers became so large that Henderson’s Arena in College Park, GA, became the new location for 28 years.

By 1996, over 10,000 people were served. Funds and toys are provided by Fulton Co. and Toys for Tots, as well as local businesses, civic groups, and churches.

Due to COVID, gatherings were prohibited for 3 years, and Henderson’s Arena was torn down. The program alternated to a drive-through initiative during the time of social distancing.

For the return of the dinner in 2025, Helping Hands has partnered with the City of College Park to be hosted by the Georgia International Convention Center!

Who We Are

This initiative started with one goal in mind. To make a difference. There is always opportunities to give back to those that are disadvantaged. Our founder understands that more than anything.

  • Founder

    Dr. Louis Okun has spent 35 years as a dedicated chiropractor, working alongside his wife, Lori, while raising their son, who now follows in his footsteps as a chiropractor in Flagstaff, Arizona. Beyond his professional achievements, Dr. Okun is a passionate advocate of living life to the fullest, embracing running, cycling, swimming, hiking, and travel as integral parts of his journey. For 25 years, he has shared his love for basketball through coaching, nurturing both skill and character in his players. In 1989, driven by a profound desire to give back, he founded Helping Hands, a testament to his belief that life’s greatest rewards come from serving others. Dr. Okun’s life is a reflection of his core philosophy: the more we give, the more we grow, and in turn, the more we receive—physically, emotionally, and spiritually.

  • Co Founder

    Dr. Lori Okun has devoted 35 years to her practice as a chiropractor, embodying a deep commitment to healing and wellness. An avid equestrian, she finds balance and inspiration in the freedom of horse riding, cycling, hiking, and cherishing time with friends. As the co-founder of Helping Hands, her unwavering dedication has been a cornerstone of the organization’s success for over three decades. Dr. Okun’s journey is one of compassion and service, driven by a belief that true fulfillment comes from lifting others and creating lasting change in the community.

  • Lead Volunteer Coordinator

    Cheryl Brignac personifies the delight of serving others, finding meaning in extending warmth, generosity, and love to everyone she meets. Cheryl has dedicated her life to making a difference as a volunteer coordinator since 2006, bringing her heart and everlasting passion for people to every event she organizes. Her contagious excitement and unwavering dedication ensure that each event is a success, as she works hard to link resources, volunteers, and communities in meaningful ways. Cheryl's friends often claim she never meets a stranger, because she greets everyone with the love and care of an old friend. Cheryl's passion for the community extends beyond her volunteer activities and into athletics. She is an excellent athlete and coach who has competed and coached in basketball, volleyball, softball, and track.

    Garnering MVP accolades in each sport and being named Coach of the Year in basketball. Cheryl not only develops her players' athletic abilities, but also their character, inspiring them to grow as individuals both on and off the field. Her tale exemplifies the power of compassion, devotion, and the notion that even the simplest acts of kindness may have a long-lasting impact on the world.
